Local veteran inducted to the Florida Veterans’ Hall of Fame

PENNEY FARMS, FL, December 6, 2018 – During the December 4th cabinet meeting in Tallahassee, Governor Rick Scott, the Florida Cabinet, and the Florida Department of Veteran Affairs, held an induction ceremony for the Florida Veterans’ Hall of Fame Class of 2018.  Penney Retirement Community announced Captain David Quirk, USN (ret), Penney resident and Board member, was among the inductees.

The State of Florida established the Florida Veterans’ Hall of Fame in 2013 to recognize and honor those military veterans who, through their works and lives during or after military service, have made a significant contribution to the State of Florida.  Categories of qualification include Advocacy on Behalf of Veterans and Civic Activities and Contributions.  Only 20 new members are accepted each year.

“I am truly honored and humbled to receive this recognition, especially when I saw the names of other recipients.  This honor is accepted on behalf of all of my teammates, as none of my accomplishments have been based on my efforts alone – it’s always been about team work.” Quirk said.

After 31 years of serving our country in the Navy, David “Dave” Quirk continues to serve others through his many volunteer commitments.  He has volunteered countless hours to his neighbors and fellow veterans living in the retirement community and in Clay County.

Dave serves on the community’s Board of Directors and provides banking and legal assistance to residents, in addition to helping fellow veterans apply for military benefits they would otherwise not receive.  His civic contributions include; serving as a volunteer coordinator for the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide service and the Honor Flight program; volunteer service with the Green Cove Springs State Attorney’s Office,  Mobility Worldwide (formerly PET Florida), and the Orange Park Community Theatre.

Teresa Scott, President/CEO of Penney Retirement Community, stated “Dave is the most unselfish individual I have ever met,” and noted he has received Volunteer of the Year awards locally from the Paul & Klare Reinhold Foundation (Celebrate Clay Awards) and statewide from LeadingAge Florida.

Penney Retirement Community is a Christian Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) located in Penney Farms, Florida.
